Clamp the template onto a workpiece, register the bushing in a hole, and plunge the bit down to create a dead-straight shelf-pin hole . Shape a template from plywood, hardboard, MDF, or acrylic and use it over and over to produce identical pieces. Because of the offset between the bit and bushing, the bit traces a slightly larger version of the template . To calculate this offset, take the guide bushing’s O.D., subtract the bit diameter, and divide by two. Note that to create identical pieces, you must use the same router bit and bushing each time. It pairs a guide bushing with a collar matched to a specific-diameter bit. The collar compensates for the bit diameter and the offset between the bit and collar. Inlays routed without the collar fit perfectly in recesses routed with the collar in place . Sand or plane a slight chamfer on the bottom of the inlay, then glue it in place. However, it’s apparent there is often a lack of awareness regarding the readily available design options there are to overcome common challenges. Here’s some advice when considering differences in bushing design. Use the template to trace the pattern onto the workpiece. Liner bushings are used with the renewable-style bushings to provide a hardened, wear-resistant hole in an otherwise-soft jig plate. The close sliding fit between the renewable bushing and the liner bushing permits the bushing to be changed repeatedly over long production runs with no loss of positional accuracy. The headless design of liner bushings allows them to be mounted close together and flush with the top of the jig plate. As with the press-fittype bushing, however, these bushings offer less resistance to heavy axial loads. I’m using a generic brass guide bushing with the chintzy festool plastic adapter that goes into the baseplate of the router. In addition I can’t seem to get the brass lock ring to stay tight. The darn thing keeps loosening, then the bushing spins, then the slightest pressure causes the bit to devour the bushing. Overall, I found these template guide bushings to be functional and worth the asking price. Our brass guide bushings eliminate caliper twisting caused by rubber guide pin bushings. An absolute must “while-your-at-it” when doing the brakes. Upgrading the bushings to brass will result in much longer pad life and more consistent brake pedal feel.
